Artwork Backstory
Pine Mountain State Park was the natural starting point for the Kentucky State Park Passport Series. I wanted the series to begin with something bold: a sweeping view that could capture the spirit of Kentucky wilderness in a single image.
Pine Mountain offered that feeling immediately through its cliffs, pines, and layered ridges fading into the distance. It became the perfect “first stamp” for a visual passport through the state’s parks.
This piece went through several iterations as I balanced natural realism with the stylized NSS aesthetic. I refined the cliff textures, shaped the river’s curve, and adjusted the lighting until the scene felt like an adventure waiting to happen.
The typography echoes vintage travel posters, recalling a time when visiting a state park meant packing a map, a canteen, and a sense of wonder. As the first entry in the 15-part Passport Series, Pine Mountain set the tone for what follows: bold landscapes, iconic views, and a celebration of Kentucky’s natural heritage—one park and one story at a time.
